Artist, painter Sam Clayton has explored the nature of personal experience as expressed through image and form since the nineteen seventies. His work achieves its power from the visceral resonance of its physical presence. The work is intuitively constructed and suggests possibilities, inviting the viewer to find or recognise aspects of their own life experience or reality. The subject is making art, the object is whatever form and image makes it happen. STATEMENT: visual art ... visual poetry The stuff that art is made of is often only half the story. A work of visual art involves material, intention and chance or discovery. The significance of these variables when considered individually is somewhat immaterial, it's about how the sum really is greater than it's parts. Consider the collages and sculptures of Kurt Schwitters; carried on in Robert Rauschenberg's Combines, Card Birds and Gluts; John Chamberlain's crushed painted auto pieces; and on into the iconoclastic yet intimate works of Richard Tuttle. In each case the creative voice is unique. What they share in common is a transformative moment where intention meets material, often unorthodox material in service of an esthetic end. The poetry is expressed not only in the actions taken, but in the choices made, be it the recognition of the qualities of a random object, a chance event or an intentional gesture and how it all works together to create a greater whole.
